Synology Hyper backup – recovery – local computer to external usb drive
Here we describe how to recover a dataset from a completed backup.
External USB drive
With experience, we have discovered the best way to recover a full backup is to first, take a copy of it onto an external usb drive. Connect up an external hard disk of at least the size of the full backup
We log into the Cloud Server.
Open ‘File Station’.
Browse to the folder with the relevant company’s *.hbk file. Check the size of it by right mouse clicking it and selecting ‘Property’s’. Make sure there is at least that amount available on the external USB drive.
We connect the external usb drive to the NAS (in our data center).
Copy the ‘*.hbk’ to the USB drive. In the File station it is called ‘usbshare1’.
Allow 4 hours per 100GB. Basically, its an overnight job.
Sending the backup to the client
The backup file is just 1 file which contains all the clients data. This is usually be too big to send by email to our client so we normally arrange for it to be delivered.
How do we extract the data.
The software used to view the backup is called ‘Synology Hyper Backup Explorer’. This is a free download from the Synology web site. If you need to select a device, choose ‘NAS’ then choose SA6400.
Once you have downloaded and installed ‘Synology Hyper Backup Explorer’ you can connect the external USB drive to your PC.
Run the software and browse to the ‘*.hbk’ file and select the data you need to recover.
Make sure you recover it to a folder you can find later!
