Connected without internet

This issue can appear when a Wi-Fi device (iPad, mobile phone, Laptop, TV etc) is able to connect to a Wireless Access Point (WAP) but internet is not available.

This can be caused by network saturation, interference, overuse, clashing IP’s, stale sessions’ etc. Unfortunately, it is a general issue with no single cause or solution, so we have listed a few here which we hope you find helpful.

Solution 1 Restart your device

Restart your Wi-Fi device. If you have several devices, switch them all off. Then turn one on and check to see if it connects. If so, then turn on the remaining devices and they should also connect.

Solution 2 Restart your WAP

If you can, you should restart your WAP. Remove the power from it for 10 seconds. When you plug it back in, allow it about 5 minutes to fully start up.

If you are a tenant in an apartment, you may remove the WAP and disconnect the network cable from it for 10 seconds. Allow it 5 minutes to fully start up.

Solution 3 Restart your router

If you have access to your router, restart it by unplugging it from the power for 10 seconds. When you plug it back in, allow it about 5 minutes to fully start up.

Solution 4 Check for interference

Check for interference from other electrical devices. Interference may cause this type of disconnection. Please ensure that you minimize the amount of devices which can interfere with your Wi-Fi. These include, Baby Monitors, Microwave ovens, Wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices, wireless headphones, wireless keyboards and mice, wireless cameras, low quality LED lights, some electric motors etc.

Solution 5

If you are using a managed network (Campus, Flat, Apartment, Hotel, Bar or other public Wi-Fi connection) ask the network manager to restart your network service. Only do this after going through the procedures above.

Solution 6 Upgrade your equipment

Your WAP may only be using a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi standard. Check that it can handle a 5GHz channel and if it can, then try to connect your device to your WAP using the 5GHz channel. If you are in any doubt, contact Megganet and we will be able to tell you which device you have.

If your Wi-Fi Router or your WAP is an older type, you should upgrade it to a newer model (preferably CAT 6 or higher).

Please note, if you are a Tenant in an apartment, owned by a landlord, the cost of upgrading may fall to yourself and not the landlord. If you wish to upgrade, contact Megganet and we will firstly check what equipment you have, and give you a quote for callout and equipment upgrade. Once you confirm this, we will schedule a time slot with you.

If the issue is within a public premises, the local manager can approve the callout fee and cost of the equipment upgrade.
